Alliance for National Transformation (ANT) presidential candidate Gregory Mugisha Muntu has warned voters in Bugisu subregion against what he described as the dangerous culture of idolising President Museveni, the incumbent and National Resistance Movement (NRM) flag bearer.
During campaign stops in Manafwa, Namisindwa, Bududa, Bulambuli and Sironko, Muntu urged the electorate to “retire President Museveni” by voting overwhelmingly for change in the forthcoming general election.
He told supporters that Uganda’s political stagnation has its roots in a leadership culture that elevates individuals above institutions, arguing that sustainable progress can only come from integrity, accountability and strong national systems.
Muntu said Uganda’s governance problems are driven by a “value deficiency” within the ruling administration, citing corruption, manipulation and the erosion of accountability mechanisms as examples of how institutions have been weakened over time.
Addressing rallies in Sironko Town and at the Lwakhakha border in Namisindwa, Muntu said no country can advance when citizens are made to believe that one individual is indispensable to national stability.
“Will he evade death to continue with his vision for Uganda?” Muntu asked. “Do not attribute the security of a nation to one individual, Museveni.”
He argued that President Museveni’s prolonged stay in power has created a perception among some Ugandans that he is the only capable leader, yet neighbouring countries continue to thrive under regularly changing leadership.
“Had it not been the controversial constitutional amendment to scrap term limits, we would be like Kenya and Tanzania,” Muntu said, noting that Kenya has had three presidents since Daniel arap Moi retired, while Tanzania has had five leaders since the Nyerere era.
“Here in Uganda, 40 years — no change at all.”
